UK Statutory Holiday Entitlement (28 Days = 5.6 Weeks)
Under the UK Working Time Regulations 1998, all workers have the right to a minimum of 5.6 weeks of paid holiday each leave year. This statutory baseline applies equally to full-time staff, part-time employees, zero-hours contractors, and agency workers.
For an employee working standard 5 days per week, 5.6 weeks equates to 5 days ร 5.6 = 28 days. While employers may choose to include the 8 standard UK bank and public holidays within this statutory 28-day allocation, part-time employees cannot receive a lower proportional allowance.
For part-time workers who work irregular shift lengths or variable schedules, calculating annual leave in hours is generally recommended by ACAS. Multiplying contracted weekly hours by 5.6 yields the exact total paid hours of holiday due for the full year.

Key legal rules regarding annual leave accrual, bank holidays, and leave years
Under the UK Working Time Regulations 1998, almost all workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid statutory annual leave per leave year. For full-time employees working 5 days a week, this equals 28 days. For part-time workers, entitlement is calculated by multiplying 5.6 by the number of days worked per week (capped at 28 days).
Part-time workers are entitled to a pro rata share of public and bank holidays, regardless of whether their scheduled working days fall on a Monday. If a bank holiday falls on a day you do not work, you are entitled to time off in lieu or pro rata holiday added to your total annual entitlement.
No. Under UK employment regulations, employers cannot legally round down statutory holiday entitlement fractions (e.g. 16.8 days cannot be rounded down to 16 days). Many employers choose to round up to the nearest half or full day (e.g. 17 days), or allow the worker to take the exact fractional hours.
When your employment terminates, you are entitled by law to payment in lieu for any statutory leave accrued but not taken during the current leave year. The calculation reflects the pro rata fraction of the leave year worked.
To calculate leave in hours, multiply your weekly contracted hours by 5.6 weeks. For example, working 22.5 hours per week gives 22.5 ร 5.6 = 126 hours of statutory paid holiday per year.
